SUMMARY:Eduardo Padron Campus Honors College Colloquiums @ Koubek Center
DESCRIPTION:It is a pleasure for the Koubek Center to host some of the colloquia with students of Eduardo Padron Campus’s Honors College. Part of the mission of the Honors College is to inspire students to be well-rounded citizens of the world. Fittingly\, the series at Koubek began with a stirring conversation on October 21st led by choreographer and dancer Irene Lozano\, director of the Flamenco Dance Institute\, the official school in the United States of the Escuela de Flamenco de Andalucía (Andalusia Flamenco School). The next encounter featured Miami’s own Haitian American multi-disciplinary artist and educator Inez Barlatier. It was an opportunity for students to learn about and explore\, hands -on\, the music\, culture and history of Haiti with an extraordinary performer. The final encounter this year will feature Cuban multi-instrumentalist and composer Michael Gil on December 2 who will take students on a musical journey featuring ancestral instruments of different global indigenous cultures.

SUMMARY:Little Havana Social Club (Leslie Cartaya + Celia Cruz All Stars)
\nThe safety of our patrons\, students\, and staff is our priority. Measures to prevent transmission of Covid-19 will be enforced at the event in accordance with federal\, state and local health agency guidance. Facial coverings will be strongly encouraged. We appreciate your collaboration.

SUMMARY:Point of Convergence
DESCRIPTION:Point of Convergence – A Musical and Dance Voyage developed by Arsenio Diaz – is a program that recognizes and respects cultural differences by promoting the understanding of ethnic heritage through music and dance. The main purpose of this program is to bring awareness about the need to preserve heritage\, traditions\, and culture. \nThe performance features the use of ethnic instruments such as the Sitar\, Tabla drums\, Bata drums\, and Suona horn (to name a few) to highlight the mesmerizing and skillful Afro-Cuban and Indian dances. This multi-disciplinary show is a journey through music and dance that starts with traditional and ceremonial pieces of each of these differing cultures\, eventually joining one another on stage to show us the points of similarities these two seemingly differing cultures actually hold. We therefore hope to present an original\, didactic\, and exceptional performance that will be fascinating\, educational\, and accessible to our community. The approach to this project is rooted on the conversion of ethnicities and the celebration of multiculturalism and will be performed by artists from our local community – artists with an Indo-American and Afro-Latin heritage. The skills\, experience\, and expertise of the performers\, along with the ravishing sonorities and dances\, will delight and awe the audience with a performance that embodies the heritage\, traditions\, and culture of many of our communities in the South Florida area. \nFeatured Artists – Arsenio Diaz\, Michael Gil\, Marisol Blanco\, Aparna Matange\, Manuel Clua\, Sudhir Limaye\, Eduardo Rodriguez.

SUMMARY:Women of the Caribbean Concert
DESCRIPTION:Three dynamic\, powerful performers — singers\, musicians\, and songwriters Yusa\, Inez Barlatier\, and Keba— headline the concert Women of the Caribbean\, a musical celebration staged outdoors\, in the Koubek’s Gardens\, marking the re-opening of the Koubek for limited-capacity audiences following COVID-19 guidelines. \nYusa is a Cuban a multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, songwriter\, lyricist\,  arranger\, and composer powerhouse. Her work suggests a deep knowledge of Cuban musical traditions such as son and trova\, but updated with elements of jazz\, pop\, and R&B. A classical guitarist by training\, Yusa specialized early on in the tres\, a small six-string guitar-like instrument that is the defining sound of Cuban son\, and later incorporated in her music an electric bass\, keyboards\, and percussion instruments. She was a founding member of Interactivo — an adventurous collective that blended elements of hip-hop\, rock\, jazz\, and blues with Cuban son\, timba\, rumba\, and boleros — before embarking on a solo career that has included collaborations with Brazilian singer and songwriter Lenine\, Omara Portuondo\, Raly Barrionuevo\, Veronica Condomí\, Liliana Vitale\, Nu Deco and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. \nMiami’s own Inez Barlatier is a Haitian-American multi-disciplinary artist and educator. She learned to play guitar from her father\, Jan Sebon\, himself a multi-disciplinary artist and educator and a mainstay of the group Kazak International. Barlatier started performing at the age of 12 and\, in time\,  organized her own band\, Kazoots. She has appeared as a solo performer\, accompanying herself on guitar\, her rich\, expressive voice\, storytelling lyrics\, and on-stage presence evoking the work of folk music-based artists such as Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading. \nThe sound of Trinidad-born singer and songwriter Keba is an organic blend of classic soul\, R&B\, and pop (she mentions artists such as Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin as references) mixed with her distinct rhythmic sense. Her lyrics have been described as a mix of “raw vulnerability with a playful exploration of love\, femininity\, and identity as a first-generation immigrant and millennial.” She performs both as a solo artist and a front woman of the funk\, soul\, and R&B band\, Keba & The Usual Suspects. She launched her solo career in 2013 with the release of Wildfire\, and in 2018\, she followed it up with the release of the EP\, Filmstrip.

SUMMARY:100 Years of Astor Piazzolla
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary musician\, composer\, and bandleader Astor Piazzolla\, the creator of New Tango\, would have celebrated his 100th birthday this March 11. \nWhile listening to his music today\, it’s hard to understand how controversial he once was and the violent reactions he inspired. But for his New Tango\, Piazzolla looked past tradition\, the dancers’ needs\, and the postcard clichés of tango\, and drew instead from European classical music\, jazz\, and  Klezmer\, a distant echo perhaps of his growing up in the Lower East Side in New York City. His New Tango included soaring melodies\, Bachian fugues\, urgent Bartok-inspired rhythms\, walking basses\, and the sound of the electric guitar. It was a blast of fresh air. \nAnd just like that\, the man so many traditionalists accused of killing tango might have saved it — most notably from itself. \nHis New Tango stirred and re-energized the genre at home and reached a new\, global audience. It brought Piazzolla — who\, as a student of classical music by day and a tango musician by night\, once dreamed of becoming a classical composer — to classical music temples. His admirers and collaborators came to New Tango from unexpected places in the music universe\, including classical masters such as Mstislav Rostropovich\, Gidon Kremer\, and Yo-Yo Ma; jazz luminaries such as Gerry Mulligan\, Gil Evans\, Al DiMeola\, and Gary Burton\, and dance music diva Grace Jones. \nAstor Piazzolla died in July 1992. SUMMARY:Mini Concierto con Yusa
DESCRIPTION:The work of Cuban singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Yusa is as influenced by Brazilian music\, and North American funk\, soul and jazz as by Nueva Trova and son. Her singing (her rich\, sultry voice has elicited comparisons to Tracy Chapman); her poetic lyrics\, and broad musical references suggest an update of the troubadour tradition in Cuban music.
