DESCRIPTION:Women in Theatre\, founded by Simbios Art Corp in collaboration with the Koubek Center\, is dedicated to supporting and empowering women in the theater industry. Since our inaugural season launch in October 2023\, we have received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. Our events have fostered meaningful discussions and helped create a vibrant network of women theater professionals. \nThese events consist of sharing breakfast with women in the theater industry and featuring four panelists who speak about their careers to inspire\, motivate\, and create conversation with peers. The panels have a fee of $10 to cover breakfast costs\, and workshops have a fee of $20 to cover breakfast and provide a symbolic fee to the teacher. \nYour contributions would help inspire and empower our attendees\, many of whom are eager to learn from seasoned professionals like yourself. Every woman in the theatre industry is invited to come\, these are not supposed to be elite events. \n

DESCRIPTION:Two Islands is an evocative documentary that uses the art of cinematic storytelling to explore an extraordinary international cultural exchange between Afro-Cuban artists from Miami and First Nations Aboriginal artists from Australia. This collaboration delves into the rich traditions\, rituals\, and ceremonies of these two vibrant cultures. Through the exchange of ideas\, values\, and traditions\, Two Islands highlights the power of cultural connection in fostering tolerance\, acceptance\, and the continuous growth of our diverse global community. \nThe journey began with a two-week artistic residency in Miami between the Afro-Cuban and Aboriginal artists that culminated in a multidisciplinary musical and dance performance at the Koubek Center in December 2023\, featuring Afro-Cuban multi-instrumentalist and educator Michael Gil\, who worked alongside with Gary Lang\, Artistic Director and Choreographer of the Aboriginal-run NT Dance Company; Banula Marika\, Yolngu elder from East Arnhem Land and David Spry\, Marranunggu Marrathiyel singer-songwriter from Darwin\, Australia\, along with Afro-Cuban dancer and choreographer Marisol Blanco from Sikan Afro-Cuban Dance Project and musicians Manuel Clua\, René Pedroso\, and Caridad Paisán\, and dancers Suramy Suarez Braulio Hernandez. \nThe culmination of this two-year international cultural exchange is now brought to life in Two Islands\, a documentary produced by Melissa Messulam\, Director of MDC’s Koubek Center\, and directed by Humberto Ochoa\, a renowned storyteller and photographer known for his work in documentary and portrait photography. \nThis inspiring film was produced by Miami Dade College’s Koubek Center and was made possible thanks to the support of Miami Dade College\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs.

DESCRIPTION:El programa En Residencia\, creado en julio de 2021\, nació con el propósito de fortalecer y nutrir el ecosistema cultural de Miami a través del trabajo de nuestros artistas locales. Esta iniciativa busca impulsar la creatividad\, abrir espacios de experimentación y fomentar el diálogo entre los creadores y la comunidad. \nEn Residencia está abierto a artistas de todas las disciplinas y en cualquier etapa de su carrera. Como parte del programa\, los participantes tienen acceso a las aulas y al estudio de ensayo del Koubek Center para desarrollar nuevos proyectos\, investigar\, crear y colaborar. At a time when education for women was rare\, she pursued knowledge with determination\, becoming one of the most influential literary figures of her era. \nThis engaging play blends Sor Juana’s writings with imagined moments from her daily life\, exploring her intellectual journey\, her decision to enter the convent\, and the challenges she faced. Cosmic Curiosity captures an era when poets\, scientists\, and philosophers were shaping the world through discovery and debate. \nWritten and directed by Carmen Peláez\, a Miami-based award-winning playwright\, actress\, and director (Fake\, The Cuban Vote\, Rum & Coke). She is a 2023 MacDowell Fellow\, Ellie Award recipient\, and HBO NYLFF Short Film Competition winner. As a dedicated teaching artist\, she helps young people develop their own plays. \nA small ensemble of professional actors will bring Cosmic Curiosity to the stage\, making Sor Juana’s story engaging and accessible.
