SUMMARY:Frenesies
DESCRIPTION:L’Alliance Française and Koubek Center present Frénésies\, a theatrical production of La Compagnie Tilawcis \nTurned towards an organic incarnation whose common thread is the departure-return report from the native island\, the territory of origin\, Frénésies starts slowly with a misguided character “I had the ocean as far as the eye could see but I was without horizon”\, sometimes candid: Thomas (twin in Aramaic).  He meets his inverted double\, free and without attachment\, real or not\, to the public to decide\, Bilal (the name of the Patron saint of the muezzins\, the one who sublimates reality by sacralizing it. It also represents water in Arab culture\, the elusive\, the intangible\, the one who overflows\, who flies\, who engulfs)\, who will do it juggling disturbing and ecstatic situations during the course an unforgettable trip on American roads. Everything contributes to tighten the room towards a philosophical\, mystical climax\, an intimate ritual to reconnect with oneself\, with one’s roots\, thus becoming a new genre: an initiatory road-theatre. \nIn French with Spanish subtitles \nMarch 20th @ 8PM \nFREE TICKETS with RSVP \nFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Brooklyn-Cumaná
DESCRIPTION:American composer and accordionist Sam Reider and Venezuelan cuatro player Jorge Glem were born to different creative traditions\, but each has found fertile common ground in the hothouse of cross-cultural collaboration. Glem\, a founding member of the Latin Grammy Award-winning C4 Trio\, first bonded with Reider over shared musical virtuosity and curiosity\, leading the way to a unique repertoire of songs that fuses enduring South-American forms like merengue and joropo with U.S. folk roots and traditional jazz. The title of the duo’s LP\, Brooklyn Cumaná\, pays tribute to both of the players’ respective hometowns. The complex and beautiful fusion music of Glem and Reider’s ever-expanding vision takes center stage for this live performance premiere at the Atrium. \nWHAT: Brooklyn-Cumaná in concert\nWHEN: Saturday June 17 – 8 PM\nWHERE: Koubek Center Theatre (2705 SW 3rd Street\, Miami\, Fl 33135)\nTICKETS: $20 online – $25 at the Door\nFree Parking

SUMMARY:Yankee Bajan
DESCRIPTION:Yankee Bajan by Linda Parris-Bailey \nKoubek Center -Co-production with DVCAI & Parris-Bailey Arts Theatre \nLinda Parris-Bailey’s Yankee Bajan is a play with music that explores the experience of African-American expatriates in Barbados\, the land of their family origins. “Bajan” is a term for Barbadian. Can one return home to a place that has never been home? Will the young ones in the family flourish coming of age as Bajans\, or will their “Yankee” culture hurt friends and family? What cultural and colonial baggage does one bring to such an experience? In the process\, Yankee Bajan examines the circumstances in the United States that would drive a family to consider becoming expatriates. Through live performance and musical references from Brooklyn to Barbados\, Yankee Bajan takes the audience back to the wisdom of the Barbadian Heroes\, a select group including freedom fighters\, trade union pioneers\, and defenders of human rights. It takes us through the expatriate experience\, and ultimately\, the return to an independent Caribbean island.

SUMMARY:DISC-COVER@Koubek
DESCRIPTION:Koubek Center is excited to announce DISC-COVER @ Koubek\, a new program that spotlights new musical releases by homegrown artists.  The Koubek will partner with local artists throughout the year by hosting concerts highlighting the exciting new music being released in our Magic City! \nPostcards is a rocking\, symphonic sophomore album from Miami-based Lemon City Trio. Nick Tannura (guitar)\, Brian Robertson (synth/keys)\, and Aaron Glueckauf (drums) bring a lot to the table. \nTannura plays lead lines with the presence of a vocalist. Robertson arranges with the touch of a film composer — he is one — broadening the instrumentation while always keeping the song laser focused on melody. Glueckauf\, meanwhile\, is a human beat machine\, the tasty backbone of everything else happening in the music. \nProgressive rock\, jazz fusion\, contemporary Saharan music\, the aforementioned hip hop and funk — the name Postcards is a reference to visiting all these musical destinations\, stopping for a spell in each and sending something back home. What makes LCT cool is their ability to go to all these disparate places and always sound like themselves in the process. \nThe album release concert will feature Brian Potts (founder Miamibloco). \nFREE PARKING

\nDULCE MARIA LOYNAZ \nThis event is in Spanish \nMiami Dade College’s Koubek Center is pleased to present An Homage to Dulce María Loynaz\, an exciting new production honoring a titan of Cuban literature\, which brilliantly pairs her poetry with the music of two of Cuba’s greatest composers\, Ernesto Lecuona and José White Lafitte.
