SUMMARY:100 Years of Astor Piazzolla
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary musician\, composer\, and bandleader Astor Piazzolla\, the creator of New Tango\, would have celebrated his 100th birthday this March 11. \nWhile listening to his music today\, it’s hard to understand how controversial he once was and the violent reactions he inspired. But for his New Tango\, Piazzolla looked past tradition\, the dancers’ needs\, and the postcard clichés of tango\, and drew instead from European classical music\, jazz\, and  Klezmer\, a distant echo perhaps of his growing up in the Lower East Side in New York City. His New Tango included soaring melodies\, Bachian fugues\, urgent Bartok-inspired rhythms\, walking basses\, and the sound of the electric guitar. It was a blast of fresh air. \nAnd just like that\, the man so many traditionalists accused of killing tango might have saved it — most notably from itself. \nHis New Tango stirred and re-energized the genre at home and reached a new\, global audience. It brought Piazzolla — who\, as a student of classical music by day and a tango musician by night\, once dreamed of becoming a classical composer — to classical music temples. His admirers and collaborators came to New Tango from unexpected places in the music universe\, including classical masters such as Mstislav Rostropovich\, Gidon Kremer\, and Yo-Yo Ma; jazz luminaries such as Gerry Mulligan\, Gil Evans\, Al DiMeola\, and Gary Burton\, and dance music diva Grace Jones. \nAstor Piazzolla died in July 1992. He was 71. \nHis brand of tango\, his New Tango\, is now played by symphonic orchestras\, chamber groups\, and string quartets worldwide. \nThe Koubek Center is proud to commemorate Astor Piazzolla with images\, voices\, and some of the New Tangos that helped turn a local\, popular dance music into a global art. \nFEATURED ARTISTS  \nPablo Aslan‘s Mash-ish \n\n“Balada Para mi Muerte” (1970) Part of the collaboration with Horacio Ferrer that also yielded “Balada Para un Loco”\n“Libertango” (1974) Recorded in Italy. SUMMARY:V Festival de Cine y  Derechos Humanos  de Madrid
DESCRIPTION:For the second consecutive year\, Miami Dade College’s Koubek Center and the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami will present a selection of films from the Human Rights Film Festival of Madrid. The Festival\, in its fifth edition\, focuses on the diffusion of films with themes that are included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, “from a pluralistic vision\, based on reconciliation and the culture of peace.” The selection criteria for the Madrid Festival is\, in part\, a response to the threat to human rights posed by the rise of authoritarian political trends in the world and the pandemic. \nThe selection of films to be presented by the Koubek Center and the Spanish Cultural Center includes documentaries and works of fiction. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles. \nTo access the film presentations\, those interested must RSVP and register using the link below the festival announcements. Then\, by email\, they will receive a link and password the day of the films. The purpose of TOSF is to offer theatre professionals and that vast pool of young talent that thrives in the digital era\, a platform to explore threatre through a virtual lens by creating theatrical pieces specifically created to be consumed virtually. SUMMARY:Mini Concierto con Elastic Bond
DESCRIPTION:Elastic Bond infuses an uplifting sound self-described as psychedelic tropical soul. The band originally started out as a loose studio collaboration between Venezuelan producer-musician Andrés Ponce and Honduran singer-songwriter Sofy Encanto\, and soon developed into a unique blend of Funk\, Hip Hop\, Soul and Latin written and performed in Spanish and English. In 2013 Elastic Bond signed with Nacional Records\, and released their album “Real” in the US and Japan which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Latin Alternative charts and made a few top lists of 2013. In 2017\, the band released their latest album “Honey Bun” which presents an organic soul sound with a glaze of hip hop and it’s the band’s first vinyl release. \nElastic Bond desarrolla un sonido único que se define como soul tropical psicodélico. La banda comenzó originalmente como una colaboración entre el productor y músico Venezolano Andrés Ponce y la cantautora Hondureña Sofy Encanto\, y pronto se convirtió en una mezcla particular de Funk\, Hip Hop\, Soul y música Latina escrita e interpretada en español e inglés. Full of comical skits and delirious situations that ease addressing the subject matter\, the play shows\, at the same time\, the reality of a world that predominantly remains male-dominated.  \n\n\nPareja abierta\, una obra escrita por Dario Fo y Franca Rame\, plantea en tono de sátira una crítica a la doble moral que existe alrededor del sexo y el matrimonio. Relata la vida de una pareja liberal con una relación abierta\, donde el único que disfruta verdaderamente de esa “libertad” es el hombre. Es una obra llena de gags cómicos y situaciones delirantes\, que ayudan a suavizar la trama\, pero que muestra\, a la vez\, la realidad de un mundo que sigue siendo predominantemente machista.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy rediscovering classic Italian commedia dell’arte or exploring Theatre of the Absurd from the comfort and safety of home through Facebook Live. These stage readings\, a collaboration with MarGi Happenings\, showcase the work of quintessential playwrights and feature some of our favorite local Hispanic actors. All readings are in Spanish. \nIn Picnic Fernando Arrabal\, one of the most recognized playwrights in the Theatre of the Absurd\, denounces the irrationality of war with and illogic\, and at times sinister\, humor. It’s an unexpected situation: The parents of Zapo – a recruit fighting in the war – arrive at the battlefield to have a picnic with their son. That’s when an enemy soldier shows up and they all share a day in the field in a friendly atmosphere. Surprised\, they discover no one wants the war and decide to end it. \nVirgilio Piñera\, one of the greatest exponents of the “literature of the absurd”\, shows in his play Estudio en blanco y negro (Study in Black and White) the conflicts created by the lack of communication between people. The action happens at a park where two men argue\, hotly\, about black and white\, one is a fervent partisan of one color\, the other is just as vociferous a defender of the other color. Wanting to prove their points\, each one tries to get the support of a couple\, sitting in a nearby and occupied in their amorous business. Without wanting to\, the couple gets snared in the debate. Finally\, a fifth character shows up to offer an unexpected solution. \nDisfrute redescubrir la clásica commedia dell’arte italiana o explorar el Teatro del Absurdo en el confort y la seguridad de su hogar a través de Facebook Live. Estas lecturas escénicas\, producidas en colaboración con MarGi Happenings\, sirven de escaparate al trabajo de excepcionales dramaturgos y el talento de alguno de nuestros mejores actores hispanos. Todas estas lecturas son en español. \nCon su obra Picnic\, Fernando Arrabal\, uno de los más reconocidos dramaturgos del Teatro del Absurdo\, denuncia la irracionalidad de la guerra desde un humor ilógico\, a veces siniestro. La situación es inesperada: Los padres de Zapo – un recluta peleando en la guerra – llegan al campo de batalla a celebrar un picnic con su hijo. Allí aparece un soldado enemigo con quien comparten un día de campo en un clima amistoso. Sorprendidos\, descubren que ninguno de ellos desea la guerra y deciden terminar con ella. \nVirgilio Piñera\, uno de los mayores exponentes de la “literatura del absurdo”\, muestra con su obra Estudio en blanco y negro los conflictos que se crean por la falta de comunicación entre las personas. La acción transcurre en un parque donde dos hombres discuten acaloradamente entre el blanco y el negro\, uno partidario ferviente del primer color y el otro del segundo. Cada uno\, queriendo probar su razón\, trata de obtener ratificación de una pareja sentada en uno de los bancos del parque ocupada en sus asuntos amorosos. La pareja\, sin querer\, se ve involucrada en el debate. Al final un quinto personaje llega a esta escena para ofrecer una inesperada solución.

DESCRIPTION:Along with the Fundación Cuatrogatos and Miami Book Fair\, the Koubek Center has re-imagined our Storybook Picnics as virtual events\, encouraging kids to create their personal version of the picnics at home while joining us on our virtual picnic. The 30-minute bilingual Storybook Picnics at Home take place twice a month\, and feature story time\, mime and circus performances\, children’s theatre\, music\, percussion and arts and crafts demos. Kids can invite their favorite stuffed animals\, GI Joes\, dolls\, and toys to join them on a blanket; or have their BFF connect at the same time. Some might like to create a video or reading from their favorite book to share with their friends online. \nEn colaboración con la Fundación Cuatrogatos y la Feria del Libro de Miami\, estamos re-imaginando nuestros Picnics de Libros como encuentros virtuales bilingues de 30 minutos que contarán con cuentacuentos\, actuaciones de mimo y de circo\, teatro de niños\, música\, percusión y más. Para estos Picnics de Libros ¡en casa!\, queremos animar a los más pequeños a que se inventen su propio picnic en casa al mismo tiempo que se unan a nosotros en nuestro picnic virtual. Los niños pueden invitar a sus animalitos de peluche favoritos\, sacar sus GI Joes\, muñecas y juguetes\, y traerlos a su manta de picnic. También pueden invitar a sus mejores amigos a que conecten al mismo tiempo para poder jugar virtualmente juntos.
