SUMMARY:THE PRACTICE
DESCRIPTION:Special Presentation \nYou can’t always om your way out of life. Such is the lesson of this funny\, philosophical film from Argentinian writer/director Martín Rejtman about a man named Gustavo (Esteban Bigliardi) who has devoted his life to zen\, but is nonetheless served up chaos by the universe and its human minions: His wife and fellow yoga teacher Vanessa (Manuela Oyarzun) leaves him but keeps their apartment. He injures his knee\, robbing him of his usual yogic practice. A revitalizing trip to India is canceled. He’s homeless. Everything is downward facing\, heavy on the dog. Could it be\, however\, that these trials and tribulations are here to teach Gustavo the true meaning of surrender and transcendence? \n—– \nMartín Rejtman was born in 1961 in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. He is a director and writer\, known for Silvia Prieto (1999)\, Cropped Head (1992) and The Magic Gloves (2003). \nSponsored by FlixLatino. \nFollow Miami Film Festival on Instagram\, Facebook and Twitter.

SUMMARY:VERA AND THE PLEASURE OF OTHERS
DESCRIPTION:Jordan Ressler First Feature \nDirector Romina Tamburello and Producer Santiago King will be in attendance to participate in a post-screening Q&A. \n17-year-old Vera divides her days between volleyball\, school\, and a secret hobby: she rents out an empty apartment to teenagers looking for a place to have sex. Playing invisible\, Vera stays behind the closed door; her own sexual desires unfolding as she listens to other people’s pleasure. \n—– \nFederico Actis is known for Historias Breves VI (2010)\, Vera and the Pleasure of Others (2023) and Todo de ti (2001). \nRomina Tamburello is known for Vera and the Pleasure of Others (2023)\, La tabla de los sueños (2012) and La Redonda (2015). \nSponsored by Jordan Ressler Foundation\, FlixLatino\, and AIDS Healthcare Foundation. \nFollow Miami Film Festival on Instagram\, Facebook and Twitter.

SUMMARY:SEGURIDAD
DESCRIPTION:Jordan Ressler First Feature Award \nDirector Tamara Segura will be in attendance to participate in a post-screening Q&A. \nThis screening is a part of the Spotlight on Cuba at Miami Film Festival\, made possible with support of ArtesMiami.  \nIn her feature documentary Seguridad\, Newfoundland-based filmmaker Tamara Segura—once named “Cuba’s youngest soldier” in a militia publicity stunt—portrays her troubled relationship with her father in the context of the Cuban Revolution. When Segura accepts a scholarship to study film in Canada\, the move offers crucial distance from her alcoholic father. After four years\, she returns to Cuba hoping to make amends. But her father’s sudden death just days after her arrival forces Segura to explore his troubled past and the role Cuba’s highly militarized system played in his downfall. Through a series of deeply personal on-camera interviews with her immediate family\, Segura unearths long-held secrets that ultimately tell a story of resilience and profound love between family members. \n—– \nTamara Segura is a Cuban Canadian filmmaker who graduated from the International Film School of San Antonio de los Banos\, Cuba\, an acclaimed institution founded by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez to help diversify the globe’s cinematic landscape. Segura’s films have been awarded film prizes in Spain\, Cuban Canana and Mexico. Recently\, Tamara has co-directed Becoming Labrador (2019)\, a feature-length documentary produced by the National Film Board of Canada that screened at the Closing Night of the Reelworld Festival 2019. Her short film C Sharp and D Suspended (2018)\, one of the finalists of the CBC Short Film Face Off contest\, premiered at the East Coast Reel Gala of the FIN Festival 2018 and is available in CBC Gem. \nSponsored by ArtesMiami\, FlixLatino\, and Jordan Ressler Foundation. \nFollow Miami Film Festival on Instagram\, Facebook and Twitter.

SUMMARY:COPA 71
DESCRIPTION:Special Presentation \nIt is August 1971. Football teams from England\, Argentina\, Mexico\, France\, Denmark and Italy are gathering at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium. The performance will take place on Sunday\, December 10 at 3 p.m. and is presented in partnership with Miami Book Fair. \nLoynaz\, considered one of the principal figures of Cuban literature\, was the recipient of more than 15 literary awards\, including the 1992 Miguel de Cervantes Prize. The Prize is bestowed annually to honor the lifetime achievement of an outstanding writer of the Spanish language and is considered the most prestigious prize one can receive for Spanish literature. The tribute will pair her poetry with the music of Lecuona\, known as “The Cuban Gershwin\,” and White Lafitte\, the famed Afro-Cuban violinist. Together\, the lyricism of Loynaz’s poetry (performed as spoken word) and music of Lecuona and White Lafitte create a perfect union and mesmerizing performance. \nThe audience will enjoy Lecuona’s composition Dame tus rosas (Give Me Your Roses)\, which was inspired by her poem\, Rosas\, as they will White Lafitte’s composition\, La Bella Cubana (The Beautiful Cuban Woman)\, and her poem CXXIV a la Isla de Cuba (CXXIV to the Cuban Island)\, to name a few of the symbiotic poetry and music pieces that will be performed. \nExecutive Producer Mónica Santibanez is a longtime admirer of Loynaz and was introduced to her work by her mother\, to whom she dedicates this production. SUMMARY:DISC-COVER@Koubek
DESCRIPTION:Koubek Center is excited to announce DISC-COVER @ Koubek\, a new program that spotlights new musical releases by homegrown artists.  The Koubek will partner with local artists throughout the year by hosting concerts highlighting the exciting new music being released in our Magic City! \nPostcards is a rocking\, symphonic sophomore album from Miami-based Lemon City Trio. Nick Tannura (guitar)\, Brian Robertson (synth/keys)\, and Aaron Glueckauf (drums) bring a lot to the table. \nTannura plays lead lines with the presence of a vocalist. Robertson arranges with the touch of a film composer — he is one — broadening the instrumentation while always keeping the song laser focused on melody. Glueckauf\, meanwhile\, is a human beat machine\, the tasty backbone of everything else happening in the music. \nProgressive rock\, jazz fusion\, contemporary Saharan music\, the aforementioned hip hop and funk — the name Postcards is a reference to visiting all these musical destinations\, stopping for a spell in each and sending something back home. What makes LCT cool is their ability to go to all these disparate places and always sound like themselves in the process. \nThe album release concert will feature Brian Potts (founder Miamibloco). \nFREE PARKING

SUMMARY:Yankee Bajan
DESCRIPTION:Yankee Bajan by Linda Parris-Bailey \nKoubek Center -Co-production with DVCAI & Parris-Bailey Arts Theatre \nLinda Parris-Bailey’s Yankee Bajan is a play with music that explores the experience of African-American expatriates in Barbados\, the land of their family origins. “Bajan” is a term for Barbadian. Can one return home to a place that has never been home? Will the young ones in the family flourish coming of age as Bajans\, or will their “Yankee” culture hurt friends and family? What cultural and colonial baggage does one bring to such an experience? In the process\, Yankee Bajan examines the circumstances in the United States that would drive a family to consider becoming expatriates. Through live performance and musical references from Brooklyn to Barbados\, Yankee Bajan takes the audience back to the wisdom of the Barbadian Heroes\, a select group including freedom fighters\, trade union pioneers\, and defenders of human rights. It takes us through the expatriate experience\, and ultimately\, the return to an independent Caribbean island.

SUMMARY:Kanay - Apuntes Americanos
DESCRIPTION:In her new work Apuntes Americanos-Kanay\, Roxana Barba investigates the ancestral Peruvian cosmovision\, the cyclical character of time\, and the European campaigns of cultural extraction in Peru. To reinterpret an archaeological excavation\, the performers travel through time cleaning the material remains of an ancient civilization. This multi-sensory performance suggests a ritual of decolonization and transformation\, comparing journeys to virtual landscapes\, narrated in Quechua\, with digitized travel books by 19th-century French explorers.
